Frequently Asked Questions

How do I hide text on a webpage?

Select any text with your mouse, right-click, and choose TextHider from the context menu. Pick your preferred mask style and the text is instantly replaced. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+H to use your last mask without opening the menu.

Does TextHider work on all websites?

Yes. TextHider works on virtually all websites — news sites, social media, email clients, banking portals, Google Docs, GitHub, Reddit, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and more. The only exceptions are Chrome system pages (chrome://) and the Chrome Web Store itself, which is a browser security restriction that applies to all extensions.

Can I hide all occurrences of a word on a page?

Yes. Open the TextHider popup, go to the Find & Mask section, type your word, and click "Mask All Matches". You'll see a live count of matches as you type. You can also right-click selected text and choose Hide all occurrences on this page.

How do I reveal hidden text?

Click any masked span to reveal or re-hide it individually. Or open the TextHider popup and click Reveal All to show all hidden text at once. Use Re-hide All to mask everything again. The Peek (5s) button temporarily reveals everything for 5 seconds then auto re-hides.

Can I automatically hide certain words on every page?

Yes. Go to TextHider Settings → Auto-hide Filters. Add any word or phrase (e.g. your real name, an account number) and choose a mask. That filter runs automatically every time any page loads, so the word is always masked without you needing to do anything.

Does TextHider collect any of my data?

Absolutely not. TextHider collects zero user data. The text you hide never leaves your device. Preferences (preset labels and mask symbols) are stored locally in Chrome's sync storage. There are no analytics, no error reporting, no servers, and no third-party SDKs.

Will hidden text survive a page reload?

Not by default — when you reload a page, the DOM resets and masks are cleared. However, the Auto-hide Filters feature re-applies saved word filters on every page load automatically.

Is TextHider free?

Yes, completely free. No premium tier, no subscription, no in-app purchases. TextHider will always be free.

What permissions does TextHider need?

contextMenus — to show the right-click menu. storage — to save your preset preferences locally. activeTab — to interact with the current tab when you click the toolbar icon. scripting — to run the masking logic in response to your actions. No broad browsing history or host permissions are requested.
